To read this article in English, please scroll down. Ich bin gerade auf 180. Dabei ist gar nichts passiert. Also jedenfalls nicht mir.

Stop it!

__________

I’m so freaking mad. Nothing happened, really. At least not to me. I wrote myself into a rage on Facebook. For a few days now I’ve been a member of a group that deals with financial independence for women. Very enlightening! As soon as I take a look into the group, I really have to be careful not to get sucked in. About every third question from the other members triggers me so much that I simply must comment immediately. Especially when it comes to one’s own worth: salary negotiations, written offers, etc.

Perhaps it is selective perception, but in other places as well I have repeatedly seen women in the last few days who are unable to assess their expert value very well. It’s the women who claim this, not me. For example, it was the first time my girlfriend wrote an offer as a self-employed person. Another expert recently asked what she can ask for for her knowledge and skills. Especially when these women think the request is great, it seems to directly fuel anti-money beliefs:

„I don’t want to look impudent“.

„I’m so happy about the request – and I’m going to gain so much in return.“

„They know that I’m not that successful yet.“

And so on. I understand it well. It’s not that I’m completely unfamiliar with it. If I am really excited about a job and/or there is a great new customer that I want to land, I also have this moment of waaaah in the offer process, precisely when I hit „send“. This is, so to speak, stage fright without a stage. I actually only have these trembling moments after I’ve already written the offer. Never before.

It is important to me to feel that, because it shows me how important the matter is to me. It is completely normal and, in my opinion, even desirable for you to exchange ideas with others if you are unsure about your pricing. For me, however, it makes a difference whether your uncertainty relates to the market or your view of your own worth.

I believe that this is an essential point for success as an entrepreneur: know your worth. And stand by it.

Yes, okay, there are a few factors that can also play a role. Is it a business client? A private customer? Sure, that makes a difference. But it shouldn’t be too big. In the end, it tends to lead to problems if you keep making different prices. Customers talk to each other more often than you might think. I would find it very strange if, for example, at the hairdresser’s (very current example) I paid less or more for the same service than the customer in the chair next to me. It also eats up a lot of energy to keep thinking about the price.

How is it that many women seem to have the feeling that they have to be grateful that someone is interested in their offer (or is it in them?). I think that’s terrifying. At the same time, it makes me angry. How are the salaries and the daily rates for women supposed to increase overall if there are still so many of us who make themselves (and thus the rest of us) small? Stop it!

„I’d love to, but I don’t know how.“ If you’re thinking something like that now: God knows you are not alone. And because that is so, I’m again spinning ideas on how I can support you in translating your added value into words and then also into numbers. Please let me know if that would be interesting for you!

Until next Friday! Stay clear.

To read this article in English, please scroll down.

Warte, was?!

Das einzufordern, was ihnen zusteht.

Rooooaaaarr.

Bis nächsten Freitag! Bleib klar.

Deine Saskia

__________

I was talking to a friend a few days ago. I told her that I would really like to reach more women who are already successful and want to become even more successful. „Just like you!“ I said to her. And she was, like: „Um, wait a minute, I would never call myself successful.“

Wait, what?! And there it was again, the realization that even women whom I experience as incredibly successful, who are visible, who can speak and do that, who earn money, are experts and mega competent in their field – even these women sometimes don’t believe their own success. That shocks me again and again. At the same time, it gives me a lot of energy, because that’s exactly what I want to change. So, to a certain extent, I am so energized by such experiences that I immediately want to put on my superheroine cape.

How is it possible that women who give everything and know that they do still do not feel successful? This feeling that it is not enough seems too strong. Therefore, the de facto available skills and knowledge cannot be activated in the decisive moment. It’s all there – yet there is no access. As if there was an invisible wall blocking everything. Maybe it’s a fence that is electrified that knocks you out briefly if you touch it. I’m thinking of one like in „Jurassic World“ that keeps the dinosaurs in check.

There are plenty of examples for electric shock fence moments: job interviews, first of all applying for a position that you actually want but don’t trust yourself to be good enough for, salary negotiations, daily rate negotiations, client acquisition … or „just“ the formulation of your own value when someone asks you why you call yourself an expert on a topic. Or if you want to write down online or in a written offer what makes you so good that you should be paid for your expertise. And what that expertise costs.

Now you might think that it is, among other things, the mindset. Yeah, yeah, alright, it is probably mainly due to the mindset. It is becoming increasingly clear to me, however, that the women who are masters of the self-sabotaging mindset have been dealing with it very intensively and deeply for some time. They’re already doing the work. They don’t need yet another person (me) to show them what kind of mindset they need. They already know. What they need is someone who can put some kind of „first aid kit“ in front of them.

A first aid kit for moments of speechlessness

Exactly the moments when it comes to recognizing your own worth, naming it and demanding appropriate consideration. To demand what is due to them. What they deserve.

Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Not having to wait who-knows-how many years for the inner work to be completed (when is it ever, really?), But to have something now that will help you to talk to the client today, tomorrow, next week .

By the way, the dinosaurs in „Jurassic World“ sometimes just break out. They don’t care about the fences. They don’t have the mindset topic. Maybe it’s because of the small brains. And yet we can learn something from them: Use the appropriate tools to switch off the power and clip the wire. At least briefly. At the crucial moment. And then, I am convinced, there will be less and less electricity on the fence. Until at some point there is no longer a fence. Because your successful communication will change your mindset at some point. Jahaaaa, it does work that way, too. Good, huh?

Rooooaaaarr.

Until next Friday! Stay clear.

To read this article in English, please scroll down.

„Ich will mein Ding machen.“

Klingt erstmal gut. Heute.

Der Lord Voldemort der Motive

Ich beobachte in diesem Kontext hauptsächlich zwei Szenarien.

Szenario A: Ganz viele Selbständige denken den Satz „Ich will richtig gut bezahlt werden.“ heimlich.

Grund #1: Du zögerst einzufordern, was Dir zusteht.

Was Du jetzt gleich tun kannst

Bleib klar.

When I ask self-employed women why they started their own business, 99% say at least one of the following sentences:

„I want to be my own boss.“

„I want to dispose of my time myself.“

„I want to do what I really want to do.“

„I want to be independent.“

„I want to be free.“

„I want to do my thing.“

Sounds good at first. It was exactly the same with me. And I had another one that I hear much less often from other self-employed women: I want to be paid really well. I do not mean „in 10-15 years, when I have completed at least 8 further training courses and gained a lot of experience“, but now. Today.

The Lord Voldemort of the motives

In this context, I mainly observe two scenarios.

Scenario A: A lot of self-employed women think the phrase „I want to be paid really well.“ secretly. It is there. Only it seems so forbidden, so outrageous, so unladylike that it is only pronounced in a whisper, if at all. It’s the Lord Voldemort of the motives.

Scenario B: I also know self-employed women who actually say the sentence out loud. Their problem, however, is often that they have the carrot dangling in front of their eyes, but still sabotage themselves again and again when they are about to bite into it.

Both scenarios are limiting. Both make you small. The result is the same whether you find yourself in scenario A or in scenario B: You fail to put your value into words at the crucial moment. The decisive moment for me is the offer that you are supposed to write for a client. Setting your hourly or daily rate. The conversation with the potential client in which you want to pitch your added value. The negotiation. In other words: All situations in which it is a matter of clearly formulating your value and quantifying it in Euros. Situations in which you fly out of your comfort zone and land unchecked in the panic zone. The really good news is that it doesn’t have to stay that way.

You are not alone

Perhaps it also comforts you a little that you are not alone. At least that’s how it usually is with me. Every day I meet more women who would love to be able to put their work into words and then exchange them for Euros. I have already experienced this in the corporate context, both from an internal and an external point of view – and it continues with the self-employed. The common denominator are women.

Now you might think: Aha, so it’s my fate. Sorry to disappoint you. It is perfectly understandable that you feel the way you feel. At the same time I want to encourage you that it is possible to feel differently. The way you deserve it: valuable. You don’t have to wait for it to happen. You can learn how.

In my experience, a useful first step in learning new behavior is to analyze the current situation. An understanding of the reasons why you are not (yet) able to express your worth in words. And to then do something differently in the next step.

Here are 3 of the reasons I have identified why some women cannot put their worth into words. Maybe you will find yourself here or there.

Reason # 1: You hesitate to claim what’s yours.

This is a classic. It’s probably mainly because you are afraid that others might think you are being outrageous. Always be modest, girl. Not.

Reason # 2: You expect others to recognize your achievements on their own.

„I’m doing so, so much, they have to see that!“ Understandable. And yet unhelpful. Nobody expects you to suddenly act like the cocky show-offs you find so terrible (it’s most often men). There is something else in between. I call this „dimming“ in my coaching sessions.

Reason # 3: You are already aware that some of your behaviors are a hindrance to you and you still stick to them.

This is the excuse trap. We are all masters at finding good, „rational“ reasons why we behave how we behave. We simply are „like that“. It would not be authentic if we suddenly behaved differently. That’s just not us.

All I can say about this is that maintaining behavior that we already know will not get us where we want to go is stubborn at best.

What you can do right now

Perhaps there is a voice in you right now that is resisting. That’s totally okay. Give it a little time. When you’re ready and want to change something: Yes! The big, deep work is the mindset. Maybe you’ve been working on that for a while. You have already read a few books and reflected a lot. That’s great! What I find particularly great about the mindset is that it doesn’t always have to come first. It is as modest as you are. 🙂

You can change your mindset through positive experiences. And in order to create these positive experiences for you, I am currently working on a „first aid kit“ for the panic zone moments described above.

What you can do right now is listen to yourself and check which of the reasons I have described might suit you. Maybe it’s all three, maybe just one, maybe none. In the latter case, I would find it super interesting to find out from you your reasons why you cannot put your worth into words.

Either way, it can be very helpful if you are aware of what exactly is hindering you. For what we are aware of, we can steer in a direction that suits us. If it is easy for you to put your worth into words, the same applies: What you are aware of, you can use consciously.

What experiences have you had so far with formulating your value? I’m curious!

Until next Friday! Stay clear.

Yours, Saskia
